Emergency Procedure

If you need to report an emergency to us such as injured or escaped livestock or damaged infrastructure please follow this procedure:

  1. Call the office on 01256 381190.
  2. If no one answers, wait for the answering message which will detail the name and mobile number of the member of staff who is currently on call.
  3. Phone the on-call member of staff who will then respond accordingly.

NOTES:

  • Please do not phone a member of staff directly unless you know they are on-call.

    Thursday 5th September - 24 seen

Cows 72 and 940, along with steers 20 and 33, were grazing among the trees near ///begin.loyal.game on Hungry Hill at 17:35 this afternoon. They were all enjoying plenty of leaves. Although rather wet, they looked well.

Despite the rain, steers 21, 35, 219, 220, 222, 230 and 271, along with cows 214 and 234, were grazing in the thicket in the pasture to the north. They were well spread out, grazing in ones and twos, which made it challenging to find them. All of them appeared happy, relaxed and in good condition. Youngster 219's eye was less red this evening, with the ulcer returning to a pinkish colour.

By 18:25, all thirteen cows had gathered near ///visa.spin.deeper after descending the hill. Most stood under the trees, relaxing and chewing their cud, while a few continued munching on leaves from the branches.

Despite the light rain, youngsters 227 and 228 were lying down and chewing their cud near ///camp.amps.derailed at 18:40. Youngster 217 and yearling 270, along with the seven Sussex cattle, were scattered around them, grazing. Most were enjoying leaves from the trees, bushes or heather. Cow 211, though quite wet, was very friendly and came over to say hello and give me some head rubs. The group of eleven were all good.

After thoroughly searching the surrounding area, I was unable to find older steer 30. When I returned to where I had left the first group at 19:05, they had all moved on and split into several smaller groups, scattered far and wide. Despite searching until 19:40, when it was getting dark, there was still no sign of steer 30. I have no idea where he was hiding today.

It appears that a contractor has been cutting the gorse bushes at the far eastern end of Sandy Hill, near ///podcast.routs.acted. I've included a photo below for reference. I'm not sure if this work is related to the water pipeline project?

The twenty-four cows found today were good, despite being rather wet.

Wednesday 4th September - All 25 seen - Steer 219's left eye appeared more red than before

The group of six Sussex cattle was found grazing near ///array.zips.gives at 16:40 this afternoon. They were very friendly and came over to say hello. After a while, they began to wander southeast along the main path. I walked with them for a bit since I was heading in the same direction. They all looked well.

Steer 20 was lying down, resting and chewing his cud near ///gazes.splints.teeth at 17:00. He appeared very relaxed and looked well. Nearby, cows 72 and 940, along with steers 30, 227 and 228, were happily grazing.

At 17:15, a mixed group of nine cows were resting at Horse Pond. Cow 234, along with steers 33, 219, 270 and 271, were standing on the south bank, while cow 214 and steers 217 and 220 were chewing their cud under a tree. Youngster 222 was happily eating lily pads deep in the pond. Steer 219 was again bothered by numerous flies around his eyes. The ulcer in his left eye appeared more red than before, and his eye was watery with a few tears streaming down his face.

At around 17:25, the group of six Sussex cattle appeared on the north side of the pond, mooing several times to let steer 1626 know that they had come to collect him. He soon emerged from the thicket on the eastern side of the pond and joined his friends as they headed north. At 17:45, I found them all together, happily grazing on heather near ///spray.love.arose.

When I returned to Horse Pond, I found steers 21, 35 and 230 deep in the thicket in the pasture to the east of the pond. They were happily munching on long grass and leaves from the bushes, looking happy and relaxed.

By 18:05, the group of nine from Horse Pond had walked along and joined the group of six. They were all spread out, happily grazing. Several were on the slope of Hungry Hill. Youngster 222 was happily munching on grass, drying off from his earlier adventures. I said my goodbyes at 18:30.

The cows were all good today.

    Tuesday 3rd September - All 25 seen

Older steers 20, 21 and 35, along with Sussex steer 1626, had just arrived at the area around ///tones.fend.tilt at 16:45 this afternoon. They all wandered into the bushes and began eating the bramble. Steer 20 was doing well today, although there didn't seem to be much change in his injury. The other three boys were all looking good.

Yearling 270 was lying down, relaxing and chewing his cud near ///retail.battle.silly at 17:05. Steers 227, 228, 230 and 271 were all happily munching on fresh grass nearby. Steers 30, 217 and 220 were grazing among the trees to the east, while steer 219 was grazing alone in the thicket to the southeast. They were all happy, relaxed and looking well.

The other six Sussex cattle were found on their favourite Sandy Hill corner at 17:40. Cows 211 and 1396, along with steers 197 and 210, were all lying down, relaxing and chewing their cud. Nearby, cow 212 and steer 1640 were grazing. After a short time, the cows got up and stretched. Cow 211 came over to say hello and enjoyed a back scratch. The six Sussexes were doing well.

At 18:05, the final six cattle were found in the pasture to the north of James Bond pond near ///bill.yacht.tower. Youngster 222 was up and happily grazing. Cows 72, 214, 234 and 940, along with steer 33, were all lying down and relaxing. They all appeared happy, relaxed and in good condition.

For awareness, the recently replaced gate on Sandy Hill still has a chain and padlock on it.

The cows were all good today.

    Sunday 1st September - All 25 seen

Steer 30 was wrestling with some tree branches near ///icons.foal.duos at 10:15 this morning. He was enjoying a hearty breakfast of leaves. Meanwhile, cows 72 and 940, along with steer 35, were eating a bit further along the track to the southwest. They were all looking well.

At 10:35, the seven Sussex cattle were climbing the hill near ///tutored.blown.farm. Once they reached the top, several of them came over to greet me. Cow 211 was especially friendly, giving me several head rubs before enjoying a back scratch. After a while, they all wandered off to the south.

The fourteen Caesar's originals were gathered around the Lookout at 10:45. Some were lying in the shade under the trees, while most preferred to relax in the sunshine and chew their cud. Steer 220 and yearlings 270 and 271 were initially munching on grass, but soon settled down to rest. Meanwhile, older steers 21 and 33 were enjoying the heather to the southwest.

Older steer 20 was doing well, lying down and resting in the sunshine. He appeared relaxed and was chewing his cud. At 11:25, he got up and moved to stand under the trees. I took a few photos of his injury, which I'll share with the Grazing Team tomorrow.

When I left at 11:45, all fourteen cattle were standing under the trees at the Lookout. There was a pleasant breeze that was keeping them cool. At noon, four of the Sussex cattle were lying down and relaxing in the heather near ///tend.husky.loosed by James Bond pond. The other three were grazing nearby.

The cows were all good today.
