At 09:30 this morning, the cattle were standing in the sunshine in the eastern pasture near the southeast corner, relaxing and chewing their cud. They were all very friendly, taking turns to come over to say hello and enjoy some strokes and rubs. The herd looked happy, relaxed, and in good condition.
After a while, they began to spread out into three groups. Thirteen moved off to graze toward Bourley Road, enjoying plenty of grass along the way. Steers 220, 228, 270, and 271, along with cow 72, stayed behind to rest and chew their cud, while older steers 20, 30, and 33 browsed on leaves among the bushes nearby. Four of the Sussex cattle preferred to forage for acorns beneath the trees along the eastern boundary. Several from the larger group stopped for a drink at the stream before turning around and slowly making their way back. Many came over at various points to enjoy long neck, shoulder and back rubs.
I said my goodbyes at 12:15, leaving most of the cattle resting peacefully on the grass near the southeast corner, with a few stragglers still grazing their way back. The Sussex cattle had also emerged from the woodland and were grazing toward the main group.
The cows were all good today.
