At 10:30 this morning, the cattle were alternating between grazing and standing to chew their cud in the warm sunshine in the eastern pasture. After a chilly start to the day, the warmth was clearly appreciated. One by one, they began to wander over to say hello, with most enjoying plenty of strokes and rubs. Youngster 222 was especially affectionate, returning several times for long neck and back scratches and rewarding me with plenty of cuddles and licks.
By 11:15, the herd had started to settle down to rest and chew their cud, with a few even dozing off. Unfortunately, thick cloud rolled in and blocked the sun, but they didn't seem at all bothered. They remained calm and friendly, happily accepting more strokes and rubs while they rested. All twenty-five were happy, relaxed, and in good condition.
I said my goodbyes at 12:30, leaving a group of nineteen resting contentedly on the grass near the southeast corner. Sussex steers 197 and 210, along with cows 211, 212, and 1396, were foraging for acorns beneath the large oak tree near the centre of the site, while steer 1640 was lying down nearby.
The cows were all good today.
