Emergency Procedure

If you need to report an emergency to us such as injured or escaped livestock or damaged infrastructure please follow this procedure:

  1. Call the office on 01256 381190.
  2. If no one answers, wait for the answering message which will detail the name and mobile number of the member of staff who is currently on call.
  3. Phone the on-call member of staff who will then respond accordingly.

NOTES:

  • Please do not phone a member of staff directly unless you know they are on-call.

  • If you are unsure if a particular situation qualifies as an emergency then please phone the on-call member of staff anyway so that they can make the decision on how to proceed.

  • Most importantly of all – please do not report injuries or sick animals via the blog alone – always call the emergency on-call contact.

    Thank you!

Saturday 11th November - All 19 seen - Steer 227 has hurt his rear left leg

A mixed group of fifteen cows were found wandering west along Sandy Hill at 10.15 this morning.  They were well spread out and were all munching on grass, gorse and leaves from the trees and bushes on both sides of the path.  Despite the frosty start, it turned into a nice sunny morning.  The cows were all happy and relaxed and were looking well.

Older steers 20, 21 and 33 were all munching on leaves from the bushes under the trees to the west of Horse Pond around ///aboard.survey.darling at 10.55.  Steer 227 was foraging for acorns under the trees a bit further west.  Sadly, it appears he's injured his left rear leg or ankle and was struggling to walk or put weight on it.  There wasn't any visible injury that I could see.  After moving gingerly around the area for a bit, munching on long grass and leaves, he lay down and rested just before 11:30.  I tried several times to contact HIWWT to make them aware.

The three older steers were obviously concerned about him and stayed close by.  They continued to graze in the surrounding area before stopping for a while to chew their cud.  They then wandered to the area around ///untruth.fruit.mercy where they lay down in the bracken.  Gypsy (steer 227) got up about an hour later and very slowly and carefully wandered up to their position.  He was eating as he went, but he didn't reach them until 13:25 when he lay down beside steer 20.  I spoke to Alex at HIWWT a few minutes later and made him aware.  Alex in turn was going to advise the Grazing Team.  I've agreed I'll check Gypsy carefully tomorrow.

Gypsy is obviously not so good today, but the other sixteen cows were all okay.
