Emergency Procedure

If you need to report an emergency to us such as injured or escaped livestock or damaged infrastructure please follow this procedure:

Call the office on 01256 381190.
If no one answers, wait for the answering message which will detail the name and mobile number of the member of staff who is currently on call.
Phone the on-call member of staff who will then respond accordingly.

NOTES:

Please do not phone a member of staff directly unless you know they are on-call.

If you are unsure if a particular situation qualifies as an emergency then please phone the on-call member of staff anyway so that they can make the decision on how to proceed.

Most importantly of all – please do not report injuries or sick animals via the blog alone – always call the emergency on-call contact.

Thursday 18th July - All 25 seen

Cows 72 and 940 plus steers 220, 228, 270 and 271 were all in the cow shed at 16:25 this afternoon. They were mostly lying down, relaxing and chewing their cud. It was actually quite cool in there today. The cows were all looking well.

Cows 214 and 234 plus steers 20, 30, 33, 35, 217, 219, 222 and 227 were well spread out, grazing in the pasture around ///expect.darts.merge at 16:45. They were all enjoying lots of fresh grass. Youngsters 217 and 219 were getting very frustrated with the large flying insects (horseflies?) that would land on their backs. They'd try swishing them off with their tails before they both went for runs through the bracken to try and escape from them. The cows grazed in a south-easterly direction. At 17:25, some of them crossed the path and started grazing in the pasture opposite. Steer 222 started to give something a really good chew. He eventually spat it out, and it turned out to be half a tennis ball. He wasn't best pleased when I confiscated it. The cows were all good.

I had a good search for the missing steers 21 and 230, before ending up back at the cow shed at 18:00. Youngster 230 was standing in the shed resting. Older steer 21 was lying down under the shade of the trees on the far side of the wooden foot bridge. He had numerous flies on his face and eyes, as well as down his left side. He got up after a while, had a stretch, and went and stood beside one of the trees. Steers 220 and 270 were grazing near the cow shed.

The seven Sussex cattle were found grazing around ///bath.zinc.speaks near Beacon Hill Road at 18:45. They were all enjoying lots of heather and some long grass. Cow 211 plus steers 197 and 210 were their usual friendly selves and came and said hello. They were happy to receive back scratches. Cow 211 gave me some licks and a couple of head rubs. By 19:05, cows 211 and 1396 had lay down next to each other and started to rest. There was no change to steer 1640's bald patches today. The cows were all happy, relaxed and looking well.

The cows were all good today. I did notice that a number of the cows had several ticks on them.
