Emergency Procedure

If you need to report an emergency to us such as injured or escaped livestock or damaged infrastructure please follow this procedure:

  1. Call the office on 01256 381190.
  2. If no one answers, wait for the answering message which will detail the name and mobile number of the member of staff who is currently on call.
  3. Phone the on-call member of staff who will then respond accordingly.

NOTES:

  • Please do not phone a member of staff directly unless you know they are on-call.

  • If you are unsure if a particular situation qualifies as an emergency then please phone the on-call member of staff anyway so that they can make the decision on how to proceed.

  • Most importantly of all – please do not report injuries or sick animals via the blog alone – always call the emergency on-call contact.

    Thank you!

Wednesday 21st August - All 25 seen - no change to steer 219's eye

Steers 20, 30, 217, 227, 228 and 271 plus cows 72, 234 and 940 were all lying down in the area around ///leap.third.overture at 16:10 this afternoon.  Steers 217 and 271 had properly buried themselves in the long grass, with youngster 217 sprawled out having a snooze.  The others were all relaxing and chewing their cud.  They were all happy, relaxed and looking well.

The seven Sussex cattle plus steers 21 and 219 were found at Horse Pond at 16:55.  Six of the Sussexes plus youngster 219 were all standing at the edge of the pond, resting and chewing their cud.  They all settled down on the bank, not too far from the water.  Steer 21 was standing under the trees at the side of the pond.  When I was checking on him, I heard some rustling in the gorse bushes behind, only for cow 211 to appear.  She immediately came over to say hello, giving me some head rubs and licks.  I expected youngster 230 to be with this group, so I looked in the thicket and surrounding area, but he was nowhere to be found.  The cows were all good.

The pink spot in the corner of steer 219's eye hasn't changed since I saw it last on Sunday.  I've included a new photo below, but have lots more if anyone wants them.  The flies are certainly being drawn to his eyes just now, more so than the other cattle.  Gilbert came and stood beside me for a while and was fine with me swatting away the flies from his eyes.

The other seven cows were found in the area around ///squad.salad.rips at 17:25.  Five were happily grazing and were enjoying plenty of fresh grass.  Youngster 230 was standing, relaxing in some bracken while chewing his cud.  Despite me giving him a long back scratch, which he thoroughly enjoyed, he wouldn't tell me where he was hiding yesterday 😊.  Older steer 35 was munching on the grass growing under the bracken in the area behind him.  The seven cows were all good today.

I wandered past Horse Pond again at 18:00 and four of the Sussexes were still lying down and relaxing.  Steers 197 and 1640 were eating heather with cow 211 in the pasture on the other side of the path to the south.  Steers 21 and 219 were quite a distance away from them, grazing further up the slope of Sandy Hill.

The cows were all good today.
